If you tried to reach me last week and found that my response time was just a little slower than usual, or if you heard the faint sound of "Illumination Station" playing in the background of a voicemail, there is a very good reason for it! Last week, alongside my work with R&B Legacy Group Real Estate, I spent time teaching at church too.
The week looked a little different than my typical schedule of property showings, listing appointments, and contract negotiations. My church hosted Vacation Bible School (VBS), and I taught a Bible class to the "littles" every single morning.
It was a whirlwind of bright lights, games, energetic songs, and the kind of pure, unfiltered questions that only little ones can ask. It’s a little different from my normal week, but it was a sweet reminder of how connected community really is.
The Heart of the Classroom
I’ve always believed that to truly serve a community, you have to be in the community. Being a "solo agent" means I wear many hats: marketer, negotiator, stager, and cleaner, but at the core of it all, I am a neighbor.
Teaching these classes isn't about checking a box or building a resume. I almost didn’t write about it at all, but this really is what my week has looked like. Part of building relationships is simply sharing a little of real life beyond the lockbox and yard sign.
Teaching the little ones was a good reminder about patience and perspective. When you’re explaining a Bible story to a group of children, you have to get straight to the point. You have to be warm, clear, and, above all, you have to listen. Those same things matter in real estate too. Whether I’m helping a first-time homebuyer navigate their first mortgage or assisting a family with downsizing into a new chapter, listening well matters.
Why Community Service Matters to Me
The Piedmont Triad Area is a special place. From the historic streets of Winston-Salem to neighborhoods across the Piedmont Triad Area, this region is built on the strength of its people.
Volunteering at VBS gives me a chance to give a little time back to the families that make this area what it is. It’s a chance to provide a safe, fun, and uplifting environment for children while their parents get a little breathing room.
Last Week Reminded Me Of A Few Things:
- Preparation matters: Showing up ready makes everything go more smoothly, whether it’s a Bible lesson or a busy workday.
- Every person is different: Every child in my class learns a little differently, and the same is true for every buyer and seller.
- A little joy goes a long way: When kids get excited about a craft or a story, it changes the whole room.
More Than Just a Transaction
When I’m teaching at the church, I see families who are working hard and doing their best for the people they love. It reminds me that a "house" is so much more than four walls and a roof. It’s the place where children grow up, where songs get practiced, and where people feel safe.
If you’re new to the area or thinking about moving to the Piedmont Triad Area, you’ll quickly find that "community" isn't just a buzzword here. It’s something we live out in our schools, our parks, and our churches.
A Grateful Heart
As I prepare to head back into a full schedule, I’m doing so with a full heart. Teaching the "littles" has been a reminder that some of the most meaningful work happens in small, everyday moments.
I’m grateful to live in a place where faith, community, and work all overlap in simple ways. Last week was a good reminder of that.
Whether I’m working or volunteering, I try to keep the same things at the center: honesty, care, and showing up for people well. Because at the end of the day, we’re all part of the same community.
Thank you for your patience last week, and thank you for being here with me in the Piedmont Triad Area.
If you have questions about the local market, or if you just want to know which VBS song is currently stuck in my head, don’t hesitate to reach out.
With service that sings.
